A Brutalist Oak and Slate Low Table
A BRUTALIST OAK AND SLATE LOW TABLE
The rectangular table of substantial, architectural construction, the dark slate or ebonised inset top within a bold oak surround raised on four square-section legs joined by a central stretcher; the solid grain of the oak exhibiting rich figuring and a warm honey-brown patina consistent with age and use; the austere geometry and honest use of material reflecting the Brutalist and Naturalist design movements of mid-century France.
The low profile and monumental proportions are characteristic of the ameublement rustique tradition as interpreted through a modernist lens — reminiscent of work produced in the ateliers of Provence and the French Alps during the postwar period. The contrast between the raw, structural woodwork and the dark recessed top surface evokes both utilitarian rigour and quiet sophistication.
