1950s Armchair in the Style of Victor Courtray

The back formed by a central panel of closely set vertical reeded staves — their rhythmic, organ-pipe repetition a distinctly modernist conceit — flanked by flat upright stiles and surmounted by a projecting flat crest rail, the whole back assembly combining the rectilinear discipline of the machine age with a residual handcraft sensibility.

The flat open arms with chamfered edges terminate above boldly turned spool arm supports of compressed form. The generous rush-woven seat, original and in well-worn condition, is raised on four dramatically turned spool legs of stacked discoid form, united by a plain flat H-stretcher and terminating in characterful ball feet — the turning here of considerable graphic confidence. The whole in darkly stained oak retaining a rich, even patina.
