1970s Will Rizzo Style Dining Table in Burl Elm
The elongated octagonal top with canted corners, veneered in a richly figured burr wood with dark mineral streak inclusions throughout, the edge bound in a polished brass band, raised on a pair of trestle-form supports each composed of brass and chrome-plated tubular metal uprights forming an open rectangular base.
The juxtaposition of warm burr veneer against cool polished metal, together with the faceted octagonal silhouette and architectural trestle bases, is characteristic of Italian dining tables of this period, when designers such as Willy Rizzo and his contemporaries favoured combinations of natural timber with brass and chrome to striking decorative effect.
Italy, circa 1970
