A 20th Century Giltwood Solomonic Column Table Lamp
A 20th Century Giltwood Solomonic Column Table Lamp
The lamp raised upon a square stepped plinth base of moulded and graduated form, the three-tiered pedestal of classical proportions supporting a turned collar from which rises a carved open spiral-twist standard of generous scale and vigorous character.
The column terminating in a turnedkapitel surmounted by a square block fitted with a standard bayonet lamp holder.
The whole retaining its original parcel-gilt and polychrome painted surface, the warm burnished gold finish with pleasing variation of tone — areas of deeper terracotta bole visible where the gilding has naturally worn along the recesses of the twist — lending the piece considerable decorative warmth and authenticity.
Fitted for electricity, wiring exposed and in vintage condition.
The Solomonic or spiral-twist column form, derived from Baroque ecclesiastical and palatial interiors of 17th-century Italy and Spain, enjoyed enduring popularity as a decorative motif throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, finding particular favour in grand Anglo-European interiors.
