A Louis XVI Style Giltwood Mirror with Ribbon-Tied Cresting, French, Late 19th / Early 20th Century
The rectangular plate within a torus-moulded frame bound with a spiralling ribbon, surmounted by a pierced cresting carved as a knotted bow with trailing, pleated ribbons; the gilding worn to reveal the red bole ground beneath.
Note: The ribbon-tied bow, or nœud de ruban, was among the most beloved ornaments of the Louis XVI period, appearing on mirrors, trumeaux and picture frames as a light, sentimental counterpoint to the architectural rigour of Neoclassicism. Combined here with the tore rubané, the ribbon-bound torus moulding that became a hallmark of the style, it gives the frame an elegant, unified vocabulary. The Belle Époque revival of Louis XVI taste, championed in the decoration of Parisian hôtels particuliers and grand hotels alike, produced mirrors of this type in considerable number, and their graceful proportions and softly worn gilding continue to suit both period and contemporary interiors.
