A Louis XV Period Giltwood Console Table
A Louis XV Period Giltwood Console Table
marble top of serpentine outline with moulded edge, the rich ground of deep crimson and russet dramatically veined in white and cream; above a deeply carved and pierced frieze of exuberant Rococo character, centred by a large pendant coquille or fan shell of radiating form surrounded by scrolling acanthus, flowering branches and asymmetric rocaille cartouche ornament issuing further leafy scrolls to either side; supported on two boldly scrolled cabriole legs of C-scroll and acanthus-wrapped form, with outswept scroll feet; united by a shaped X-form stretcher centred by a pierced rocaille cartouche of conforming decorative vocabulary, the whole carved with exceptional freedom and élan and gilded throughout.
Possibly German, circa 1750
