A Large 18th Century Spanish Walnut Console with Plank Top
The thick rectangular top formed from broad planks of densely figured walnut with a deep umber patina and pronounced evidence of age and use throughout, including natural fissures and surface wear consistent with considerable antiquity; the frieze of exceptional richness, carved in relief with three rectangular panels of stylised dentil and block ornament — a form derived from Mudéjar architectural detailing — divided by plain pilaster strips and moulded corner blocks, the carving retaining much of its original dark surface; supported on two A-form trestle ends, each composed of splayed rectangular uprights with notched and chip-carved detailing along their inner edges, united at the base by a plain rectangular floor stretcher with stepped feet and connected at mid-height by a pair of forged wrought-iron stretchers of arched and double-scrolled form, secured with original collar fastenings.
Spain, circa 1760
