Early 20th Century Florentine Rococo Giltwood Mirror
Early 20th Century Florentine Rococo Giltwood Mirror
Of rectangular form, the pierced and reticulated frame carved throughout with scrolling acanthus leaves, centred top and bottom by a stylised rosette and flanked by further floral cartouches at the mid-points of each upright, the rectangular mirror plate within a plain moulded slip, the gilding to the recesses showing traces of red bole beneath.
With a bevelled mirror plate
The dense, openwork scrollwork and emphatic acanthus carving of this frame are characteristic of the Florentine revival style, which drew on Italian prototypes and was produced in quantity for both the local and export market from the late 19th century onward, prized for its dramatic, sculptural quality on the wall.
