This large and unique mirror, circa 1920 was hand-painted using a technique called "Verre églomisé". This term, as translated from the French, means reverse painting on glass. Using a sheet of glass an artisan paints a design directly onto the glass while staying mindful that the pattern must make visual sense when seen from the opposite side of the glass, literally when seen in reverse. After the painting has been completed and is entirely in place only then is the silvering that creates a mirrored reflective surface applied.
