A French Gilt-Bronze Mounted Chinoiserie Lacquer and Kingwood Commode
The shaped rouge royale marble top with moulded edge above a breakfront case fitted with two doors, the fronts decorated overall in polychrome raised chinoiserie lacquer depicting animated figural scenes within landscape settings — with pavilions, pine trees, rocky outcroppings, and robed figures engaged in courtly pursuits — the lacquer ground of deep burgundy-red tone with incised diaper banding; mounted with gilt-bronze drapery swag corner mounts, foliate keyhole escutcheons, and a central flowerhead pendant to the shaped apron; raised on slender cabriole legs with foliate sabots.
The combination of polychrome raised chinoiserie decoration on a dark lacquer ground with the sinuous cabriole leg and shaped marble top places this commode firmly within the goût chinois tradition that enjoyed continuous revival in French decorative arts from the Régence period through to the early twentieth century. The quality of the figural lacquer panels, with their lively narrative scenes, reflects the sustained French appetite for orientalising decoration that informed the production of leading Parisian marchand-merciers and their successors.
