Louis XVI Giltwood Demi Console with Brèche du Languedoc
The moulded red and grey brèche marble top of breakfront demi-lune outline, above a fluted frieze centred and flanked by square dés carved with stiff-leaf rosettes, raised on four round tapering stop-fluted legs headed by collars, terminating in toupie feet.
The demi-lune console, designed to stand against the pier between windows, was one of the defining forms of the Louis XVI interior, typically placed beneath a pier mirror to form an ensemble with the boiserie. This example displays the full vocabulary of the goût grec as it matured in the 1770s and 1780s: the architectural fluted frieze, the rosette-carved dés marking the transition from frieze to leg, and the turned, tapering fluted leg that replaced the cabriole of the preceding reign. The richly figured brèche top, with its breakfront profile echoing the projecting dés below, is a characteristic refinement, lending the table a sense of structure and weight against the delicacy of the gilded base.
