A pair of French Art Deco Club Armchairs Circa 1925–1935
A pair of French Art Deco Club Armchairs
Each of barrel-back form, the continuous curved toprail in polished walnut sweeping down to form the arms, terminating above a pair of reeded and parcel-painted colonette supports with traces of verdigris-green decoration, raised on turned ball feet; the back, sides, and loose seat cushion upholstered in pale grey suede-effect fabric with piped detailing throughout.
The form closely relates to the work of prominent Parisian ensembliers of the interwar period, combining the classical vocabulary of the colonette support — here treated with restrained painterly decoration — with the volumetric, enveloping silhouette characteristic of the best French Art Deco seat furniture. The reeded columns with green-painted highlights recall the polychrome treatments favoured by designers working in the orbit of the Süe et Mare atelier and their contemporaries.
French, circa 1930
