Pair of Bleached Walnut Louis XIII Style Armchairs
Pair of Bleached Walnut Louis XIII Style Armchairs
The generous rectangular backs with shaped, arched cresting above upholstered back panels, the scrolled arm supports terminating in foliate volutes above baluster-turned arm posts, the over-stuffed seat cushions raised on bold baluster-turned legs united by conforming turned box stretchers, the whole in bleached oak, re-upholstered in vintage biege linen
The present fauteuils exemplify the robust architectural vocabulary of the Louis XIII and early Louis XIV period, when the turned baluster leg and scrolled acanthus arm support became the defining grammar of French seat furniture. The bleached oak frames, stripped of their original finish, lend the pair a pleasingly austere, contemporary character that sits comfortably within both period and modern interiors.
The recently applied vintage linen complements the pale tone of the wood and underscores the monumental simplicity of the form.
French, circa 1880
