NOTE
The robust, sculptural vocabulary of this lamp, with its heavily turned, stacked-disc column recalling architectural rustication, belongs to the tradition of French ébénisterie that flourished in the late 1930s and 1940s. Charles Dudouyt (1885–1946) is the designer most closely associated with this idiom. From his Paris atelier on the rue Saint-Honoré he developed a distinctive language of chunky, deeply ridged oak forms that bridged the refinement of Art Deco with a more rustic, handcrafted sensibility. His work anticipated the so-called French Reconstruction and Brutalist aesthetic of the post-war years, which workshops across France took up and interpreted in regional oaks and elm.
The present lamp, with its dished base serving as a practical vide-poche and its contrast of dark-stained lower section against the paler stem, reflects this rural-modernist spirit. The warm diffusion of the parchment shade complements the tactile quality of the timber.
