Mid Century Wrought Iron and Granite Bistro Table
Mid Century Wrought Iron and Granite Bistro Table
The circular grey granite top of generous thickness above a tripartite wrought-iron base, each leg formed as a boldly scrolled volute issuing from a central collar-turned shaft, the whole united at mid-height by a conforming trefoil bracket with further outward-scrolling terminals, each leg terminating in an inward-curling scroll foot, the iron retaining its original dark patina throughout
The present guéridon belongs to a well-established tradition of French ironwork furniture produced for both interior and garden use during the latter decades of the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth. The blacksmith's craft is here demonstrated with considerable confidence — the scrollwork, forged by hand rather than cast, retains the slight irregularities and textural vitality that distinguish wrought from industrial production. The pairing of cold, dense stonework with the fluid ornamental ironwork base reflects the enduring French taste for contrasting materials within a unified decorative scheme.
Tables of this form were produced in quantity by regional ateliers across France, particularly in Normandy and the Loire Valley, supplying both the domestic market and the fashionable garden rooms of the period's grand bourgeois interiors. The present example, with its robust construction and well-preserved patina, would serve equally well indoors or in a covered garden setting.
