A pair of French Louis XVI style giltwood Fauteuils
Each with a rectangular padded back within a giltwood frame carved throughout with running floral and foliate friezes, beaded mouldings, and rosette corner blocks, the serpentine arm-rests terminating in carved volute hand-holds above fluted and foliate-carved arm supports, the bowed seat rail similarly decorated with continuous floral carving and centred by a flowerhead tablet; raised on spiral-twist tapering legs headed by foliate collars and terminating in turned feet; the back, arms, and seat upholstered in ivory glazed linen.
The exuberant quality of the carving — particularly the densely worked floral friezes to the seat rail and back surround, and the well-resolved spiral-twist legs — places these fauteuils among the more accomplished interpretations of the Louis XVI model produced during the goût grec revival of the late nineteenth century, when Parisian ébénistes and menuisiers returned with considerable energy to the neoclassical repertoire of the Ancien Régime.
