A Vintage Brass Corinthian Table Lamp
A Vintage Brass Corinthian Table Lamp
The tapering fluted column of cast and turned brass with finely detailed Corinthian capital issuing acanthus leaves and corner volutes of good definition; raised on a series of stepped circular mouldings above a square plinth base with verde-patinated lower register, now fitted for electricity with a later white card shade of truncated conical form.
The Corinthian column lamp in brass or ormolu represents one of the most enduring conceits of English Neoclassical decorative arts, finding its origins in the oil lamp and candlestick designs of the Adam period and persisting with remarkable fidelity through the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The present example, with its crisply cast capital and well-proportioned fluted shaft, is characteristic of the quality metalwork produced by the established Birmingham and London brass foundries during the late 19th century — workshops supplying both the domestic furnishing trade and the fit-out of clubs, libraries and country houses throughout the British Empire.
