Plaster lighting occupies a singular place in the history of 20th-century design. In the 1930s Alberto Giacometti, working with his brother Diego, produced a celebrated series of plaster lamps, sconces and chandeliers for the Parisian decorator Jean-Michel Frank, whose rarefied interiors for clients such as Nelson Rockefeller and the Vicomte de Noailles prized humble materials handled with extraordinary refinement. These pieces, with their archaic, almost excavated forms and hand-worked surfaces, have become among the most sought-after objects of the period, inspiring generations of designers and artisans. The present chandelier continues that tradition, its architectural cruciform structure and cup-form lights, softened by the visible trace of the hand, giving it a sculptural presence equally at home in a classical or contemporary interior.
