A French Louis XVI Green-Painted Daybed
A French Louis XVI Green-Painted Daybed
The rectangular frame with outscrolled ends of differing heights, the taller forming a low back, both terminating in carved rosette devices, the whole retaining its original grey-green painted surface with traces of earlier decoration beneath; the seat rail raised on six circular tapering fluted legs headed by foliate collars and terminating in toupie feet; upholstered throughout in natural linen, the tufted mattress cushion accompanied by two cylindrical bolster cushions.
The asymmetric form — one end raised as a back, the other as a lower footboard — is the defining characteristic of the lit de repos or duchesse brisée in its unified single-piece configuration, a form that enjoyed particular favour in the private apartments of late eighteenth-century France.
French, circa 1780
Newly upholstered in Rosetti Linen
