Pair of Gustavian Style Demilune Side Tables with a Faux Marble Top
Pair of Gustavian Style Demilune Side Tables with a Faux Marble Top
Each with a demi-lune with a faux Carrara Marble top, the surface divided by faint radiating segments in the manner of a sunburst or fan, the moulded edge above a shallow frieze applied with a continuous band of pearling or bead-and-reel ornament; supported on three square tapering legs of elegant attenuated form, the whole retaining its original grey-blue painted surface with pleasing natural attrition throughout revealing the pale ground beneath, the paint surface of uniform silvery grisaille tone consistent
The demi-lune console in grey-painted and pearled wood is among the most canonical expressions of the Gustavian style — the Swedish interpretation of French Neoclassicism that flourished under Gustav III following his formative Italian journey of 1783–84. The attenuated square-section tapered leg, the restrained bead-and-reel frieze, and the preference for grey-blue and stone-coloured painted surfaces over gilding or veneer are the defining characteristics of the Stockholm court workshops active during the 1780s and 1790s, notably those of Johan Christian Linning and Ephraim Ståhl.
The survival of the original painted surface in this condition, with its distinguished natural patine, is increasingly rare and materially enhances the desirability of the present pair
