Art Deco Two Tier Standard Lamp in Rosewood
Art Deco Two Tier Standard Lamp in Walnut
Of boldly architectural and uncompromisingly rectilinear form, this standard lamp exemplifies the rigorous geometric aesthetic of the French Art Deco movement
The standard comprising a tall square-section column of clean, unadorned profile, raised upon a square intermediate platform or entablature — itself projecting boldly from the shaft in the manner of a classical bracket — the whole supported on a substantial square pyramidal plinth base with chamfered and stepped edges, the wide footprint lending the composition both visual gravitas and structural stability.
The entire piece executed in a richly figured rosewood-veneered hardwood of deep burgundy-brown tone, the grain of considerable natural beauty, finished to a high polish throughout. The column surmounted by a metal lamp fitting of period character.
The geometry of the design — square section throughout, with no concession to ornament or carved embellishment — speaks directly to the influence of the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs, from which the movement takes its name.
